Is Class E ClEan??

Postby VE7KHz » Tue Feb 04, 2003 5:16 pm

As I ponder how best to build one of these wonderful sounding transmitters, I can't help but think of my neighbors, who have quite crappy VCR's and TV's which can even pick up our baby monitor TX  and have made mention of my single 813 rigs fine audio in their stereo.

I would like to know how clean these Class E babies are as far as harmonics go up the band etc.? Has anyone looked on an analyser to see what little nasties might be there, or is it impecibly clean? My 813 rig's worst harmonic is 2nd at -38dB so anything better than this will be great.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Paul

Cleaner than a vacuum tube transmitter [at least mine is]

Postby steve_qix » Tue Feb 04, 2003 6:13 pm

Hi!

I must say that my class E transmitters are MUCH cleaner than any vacuum tube transmitter I've ever built. This may be due to the fact that, since the FETs are high capacitance devices, it's hard to generate 60+mhz signals out of them.

Class E also works using "soft" sided waveforms.

I don't TOUCH my own set (no cable here!) on any channel.

My vacuum tube rigs interfered pretty badly.

That's my experience.....

Regards,

Steve

Thanks Steve!

That's what I was hoping to hear. See the parts source list for a thought on surplus 48VDC supplies.

cheers!

Warm up the soldering iron.
